Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
